10,000 Trees Planted at Worgret Farm

A nature restoration project at Worgret Farm near Wareham, Dorset, has seen 10,000 native trees planted and over a mile of new hedgerows established across 50 acres of farmland.

Led by farmer Ian Baggs and supported by Trees for Dorset and Planet Purbeck, the project aims to improve biodiversity, restore natural boundaries, and support more sustainable grazing through tree-lined paddocks. Inspired by farming practices in New Zealand, the living hedges provide shade, shelter, and food for wildlife and livestock alike.

Trees for Dorset played a key role in planting 10,000 of the trees, bringing local volunteers together to help transform the landscape. Native species such as hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, crab apple and wild cherry were carefully selected to thrive in the farm’s sandy, acidic soil.

The project was made possible with support from the Farming in Protected Landscapes scheme and marks a significant step in reconnecting farming with nature in Purbeck.
