Tree Protection

Tree protection is more vital than ever. Rapid development often leads to tree loss—sometimes through underhanded means. Our members help flag concerns, enabling us to work with tree officers and planning departments.

Sometimes the solution is simple, like fencing a lime tree to prevent damage. Other times, it’s more complex and may involve planning inquiries.

We support the use of Tree Preservation Orders and help monitor for infringements. When trees are lost to felling or disease, we encourage appropriate replanting. We also contribute to national debates on tree policy.

One major success was opposing the Navitas Bay wind farm cable corridor, which threatened a 30 km stretch of tree-lined countryside, including many mature oaks. While we support renewable energy, it must be in the right place—just like trees.

Black Poplar project

Trees for Dorset are leading a project to restore Britain's rarest forestry tree, the native black poplar back into the Dorset landscape

Queens Wood

Some years ago one of our members, John Palmer, heard a radio programme where the very mixed parentage of oaks in Britain was discussed.

Veteran Trees

The Veteran Trees Project was a conservation initiative aimed at identifying, recording, and preserving ancient and veteran trees across Purbeck in Dorset.

Guarding Trees

Guarding young trees is essential to protect them from damage by animals, harsh weather, and human activity. Tree guards help ensure healthy early growth, improving survival rates.

Coppicing

Coppicing is an ancient rural craft that yielded many useful wood products with the added benefit that trees and shrubs in the wood over time are rejuvenated keeping a balance of different aged wood in the plantation.
